The Calcuscribe has an 8 lines x 80 columns screen; costs $799. The 3AA batteries last 50 hours. It offers a zoom feature (big font/small font) and you can shade (mark) text. A beginning block-marker is placed wherever block-marking is initiated.

Files transfer wirelessly to computers and printers via our InfraLink pod - different for Mac and PC. The pod stays connected to the printer/computer system and controls data traffic to and from CalcuScribes; from the computer to the printer; and from the keyboard to the computer.

Files can also be sent wirelessly to other CalcuScribes. This feature can be turned Off, via the master password, so that students don't send missives in class. For example,

• A teacher may prepare prompts and send them to each student's machine. Kids can receive a prompt directly into their story. Or, they can receive a file from which they can borrow ideas by copying and pasting into their story. The teacher can evaluate how much of the work is borrowed and how much is independent.
• Send a file to your students so that they may edit and punctuate it - perfect for measuring reading comprehension level or for grammar tests.
• Students may collaborate on projects by transferring files to each other.
• Make clones with the File-Copy command and develop multiple versions. Students, with feedback from a parent or a teacher, can decide which version they like best.

Commands execute from a Menu by pressing a "hot" key - they are at your finger tips. Refer to the QuicKeys reference card.

A big part of writing is moving text. Copy and paste from file to file (or within a file) or use the Find and Replace features.

Press F10 for word and character count to monitor writing progress.

Our spell-checker works in 2 modes:

• suggestions are provided only for the current word
• the entire document is scanned. Either type the correct spelling of the misspelled (possibly a word suggested by CalcuScribe) or select from the list of suggestions. CalcuScribe automatically replaces the misspelled word. By typing the correct spelling, it is reinforced in the child's mind. CalcuScribe remembers previously ignored words (like, proper nouns) so that they do not appear as misspelled words over and over again.

Save unlimited files and folders. Create and password protect folders - one for each user - so that students work with just their files. Passwords can be reassigned via the master password.

CalcuScribe offers On-Line contextual Help. Press F1 for suggestions.

The 10-key numeric pad can be used in the calculator mode or for quick data-entry into a file.

Features include: zoom, auto-repeat (on/off), sticky keys (on/off) and set Tab-size.

The keyboard is full-sized, quiet and sturdy. Move the cursor rapidly by using the Home, End, PgUp, PgDn keys or by holding down the <Ctrl> key and using the arrow keys. In menus, simply press a hot key for a menu item and in file-directories begin typing the filename and the cursor jumps to it.

CalcuScribe is fault-tolerant. You can undelete files, undo cuts and pastes, and files are auto-saved if the machine switches off or goes to sleep. Files are protected by a built-in back-up battery and remain saved if the main AA batteries deplete or are removed.

What is a CalcuScribe?

It's both a keyboard and a stand-alone, simple to use, portable word-processor. It uses 3 AA batteries, AC power, or a NiCad battery pack; weighs 3 lbs. and measures 9 x 12 x 2 inches. It comes in 2 models: UNO and DUO with a 3-year warranty. It communicates, wirelessly, with computers, printers and other CalcuScribes.

What does it do?

It assists with labor-intensive key boarding tasks - while computers crunch processor-intensive tasks - thus augmenting computers' capabilities. It provides quick, easy writing access away from school or work. Simply, compose your thoughts on a CalcuScribe and, later, Print or Send to a Mac or a PC - It's that simple!

CalcuScribe, with full editing features, lets you "send like a keyboard and write like a dream". It Spell-Checks your work. It has fast cursor movement to jump to various parts of a long document. Create as many folders &endash; one for each user (each with a separate password if you like) &endash; and as many files as you wish. Master password provides complete system access.

To receive files from a computer, the Receive utility is required. To exchange files with a computer, a keyboard cable (or our IR InfraLink box) may be required.

CalcuScribe has SmartHelp and special-ed features and is Fault-Tolerant: files are auto-saved, a back-up battery, that lasts several years, protects files + folders. Undelete + Undo commands recover from mistakes. Auto-shut-off conserves power + prevents file tampering.
