Description

The AlphaSmart 3000 is a simple, portable and affordable computer companion. It is compatible with any computer, Macintosh or PC, and with most printers. It enables users to type, edit and electronically store text (for example, reports, essays, email messages or notes), and to practice keyboarding, without having to be at a computer. The text can then be transferred to any computer for formatting, or directly to a printer. Its portability allows students to use it anywhere and anytime (for example, in the classroom, at home or on field trips). The AlphaSmart has an optional 100% error-free IR (infrared) interface that allows wireless transfer between the AlphaSmart and a computer or printer.

With the AlphaSmart, an entire classroom of students can write or take notes, or practice keyboarding, and later, transfer their files into any application on any computer, or print to most printers. Transferring text is simple - launch any application on your Macintosh or PC, connect the AlphaSmart using the cable and hit the "send" key. When using the infrared transfer, simply point the AlphaSmart towards the IR transceiver and hit the "send" key. Or, connect the printer cable and press the "print" key to print directly to a printer.

SmartApplet

The AlphaSmart 3000's all-new SmartApplet™ architecture is capable of extending its simple functionality with the introduction of applets. Applets are mini software applications that can be downloaded to the AlphaSmart to extend its functionality for keyboarding, templates, email and much more. Applets can be purchased as shrink-wrapped software (on CDs or disks), or in the future, on our website (as downloads). Applets can be downloaded only to the AlphaSmart 3000 (NOT to the AlphaSmart Pro or AlphaSmart 2000). In addition to the free, built-in word processing applet, AlphaWord , the first 2 applets that will be available are the Calculator applet (free), and KeyWords , a full instructional-based keyboarding program.

Its low cost allows you to provide technology access to an entire classroom of 30 students for the price of three to four computers. The AlphaSmart is a smart way to extend your technology dollars, to increase technology access, and to alleviate the equity issues at school.

The convenient, rugged AlphaSmart has been engineered to withstand handling by students, and features a kid-proof computer port. It includes a full-size keyboard and a four line text display, weighs only two pounds, and runs on 3 AA batteries for 200-500 hours of typical use. It stores approximately 100 pages of single-spaced text in 8 files, includes cut/copy/paste and a built-in 70,000 word spell checker. It can print directly to most printers through its printer port. Also included are features for individuals with special needs (sticky keys and key repeat control), as well as international character support for French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish.

Get Utility

The Get Utility software allows users to transfer text from any computer to the AlphaSmart, so you can start a report on your computer, and transfer the AlphaSmart to continue your work at home.

The AlphaSmart's optional 100% error-free Infrared (IR) interface allows users to send text via wireless infrared to any Mac, PC or printer. The infrared transfer uses the same simple one-button send and print functions as an AlphaSmart connected by cable to the computer or printer.

To use the infrared transfer, simply launch the AlphaBeam software, then open any application (for example a word processor, multimedia or presentation software), point the AlphaSmart 3000 at the pod/transceiver and press the "send" key. Text will automatically be transferred to the open application. Or, press the "print" key to print directly to a printer. The AlphaSmart can be used up to three feet (1 meter) away to from a computer, or printer.

Our infrared technology is 100% error-free and is the same (industry, IrDA) standard as that used by Apple, IBM, HP, Toshiba and many more. This means that it NEVER drops characters while transferring text to or from the computer, and it is 100% compatible with most laptop and desktop computers (that use the IrDA standard). It can be used with any computer or printer with a built-in IR transceiver (conforming to IrDA standards). If the computer or printer does not have a built-in IR transceiver, you need to purchase an IR wireless pod for Mac or PC (that connects into the serial port of a computer).

Power requirements

AlphaSmart 3000IR may either be powered by 3 AA batteries. Alkaline batteries, will power the keyboard for approximately 200-500 hours depending upon usage.

Three Year Limited Warranty

AlphaSmart, Inc. warrants the AlphaSmart keyboard and display to be free of defects in materials and workmanship for a period of three years from the date of original retail purchase. During this period, if a defect should occur, AlphaSmart Inc. will, at its option, repair or replace the AlphaSmart at no charge to you, provided that it is returned during the warranty period to AlphaSmart Inc. or one of its authorised dealers. This warranty does not apply if the AlphaSmart has been damaged by accident or abuse, or modified without the written permission of AlphaSmart Inc. or if the serial number has been removed or defaced. There are no other warranties, express or implied. Intelligent Peripheral Devices accepts no responsibility for consequential damages, including but not limited to loss of profit or benefits.
